Super Visa

Visits for Parents and Grandparents of Canadian Citizens and Permanent Residents

Canada Super Visa: Complete Information Guide

The Super Visa is a long-term visa offered by the Canadian government that allows parents and grandparents of Canadian citizens or permanent residents to visit Canada for extended stays. Unlike a regular visitor visa, which allows a stay of up to six months, the Super Visa permits eligible applicants to stay in Canada for up to 5 years at a time, with a multiple-entry validity of up to 10 years.

This visa is an excellent option for families who want to spend more time together without the need to constantly reapply for short-term visas. It’s especially ideal for helping with grandchildren, attending family milestones, or simply enjoying long visits with loved ones in Canada.

To qualify, applicants must meet several requirements, including:

  • Being the parent or grandparent of a Canadian citizen or permanent resident.
  • Providing a letter of invitation from their child or grandchild that includes a promise of financial support.
  • Submitting proof that the host meets the minimum income threshold set by the Canadian government (LICO).
  • Purchasing private medical insurance from a Canadian insurance company with at least $100,000 in coverage for a minimum of one year.
  • Completing an immigration medical examination, if required.
  • Demonstrating strong ties to their home country and an intention to leave Canada at the end of their visit.

The Super Visa does not allow holders to work or study in Canada. However, it provides flexibility and peace of mind by reducing the need for frequent visa renewals and offering a straightforward pathway to visit family over a long period.

This program is separate from the Parent and Grandparent Sponsorship Program, which is intended for permanent immigration. The Super Visa is strictly for temporary long-term visits.

With quicker processing times and less competition than sponsorship programs, the Super Visa is a practical, family-friendly option for maintaining close relationships across borders.

  • Multiple Entries: Valid for up to 10 years, allowing multiple entries to Canada during its validity.
  • Family Reunification: Provides a way for parents and grandparents to spend long periods with their children or grandchildren in Canada.

  • Medical Insurance Requirement: Applicants must have valid Canadian medical insurance coverage for at least one year. Failing to meet this requirement can lead to the refusal of the Super Visa application.
  • Proof of Financial Support: Your child or grandchild in Canada must meet the minimum income requirement (LICO). If they don’t, the application could be rejected.
  • Duration of Stay: While the Super Visa allows stays of up to 5 years, immigration officers may still limit the length of stay based on individual circumstances.
  • Entry to Canada: The final decision on your entry into Canada is made by the border officer, even if you have a valid Super Visa. Ensure all documents are in order to avoid complications.
  • Re-entry Rules: For re-entry into Canada, you must still meet the requirements and be able to show proof of your ongoing ties to your home country.
  • No Work or Study: The Super Visa does not permit the holder to work or study in Canada unless authorized. Violating this could lead to removal from Canada.
